The dawn was cold, the runway wet with dew. Captain Elena Vasquez walked the length of her F-35, her hand trailing along its skin, her eyes checking every panel, every seam. She'd done this a thousand times, but today was different. Today was her last patrol.

"All set?" Marcus appeared beside her, coffee in hand.

She took it, nodded. "All set."

They climbed into their cockpits, the familiar ritual of straps and switches, the canopy closing, the engines whining to life. Elena taxied toward the runway, Marcus on her wing, the base waking behind them.

"Control, Lightning Lead. Requesting takeoff."

"Cleared for takeoff. Good hunting."

She pushed the throttle, felt the surge, felt the lift, felt the world fall away. The sky opened above her, blue and endless, the clouds below, the sun rising over the coast.

She flew east, toward the border, toward the patrol route she'd flown for fifteen years. Marcus stayed close, his wing steady, his presence a comfort.

"You think you'll miss it?" he asked.

She looked at the horizon, at the line where sea met sky, at the world spread beneath her like a map. "Every day."

They flew for two hours, the border quiet, the radar clear, the sky empty. Elena soaked it in-the feel of the stick, the hum of the engine, the way the light changed as the sun climbed.

When they turned for home, she let herself fly a little longer, a little higher, a little farther than the patrol required. Marcus didn't comment. He understood.

They landed as the morning fog was burning off, the runway clear, the base waiting. Elena taxied to the hangar, shut down the engine, opened the canopy.

The air was cool, the ground solid, the sky behind her.

She climbed down, pulled off her helmet, looked at the jet that had carried her through fifteen years of patrols, through storms and peace and the long hours of watching.

Marcus stood beside her, silent.

She touched the fuselage one last time. "Good bird," she said.

Then she walked away, toward the hangar, toward the desk that waited, toward the life she'd chosen.

Behind her, the F-35 sat silent, its pilot gone, its patrol done. The sun rose over the base, over the runway, over the sky that would always be hers.
